Royal Palaces of Abomey

07°11′N 001°59′E · Zou

The earthen palace complex of the former Kingdom of Dahomey in the city of Abomey.

The palaces were built by successive kings of the Fon Kingdom of Dahomey, which ruled from Abomey between roughly 1625 and 1900. The site preserves the compounds of twelve kings within earthen walls, notable for polychrome bas-reliefs that record Dahomean history. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985 under cultural criteria (iii) and (iv), reference 323, and was kept on the List of World Heritage in Danger from 1985 until 2007 after tornado damage.
