Lomé grew as a German colonial port and administrative centre before the First World War, and retains colonial-era landmarks including the neo-Gothic Sacred Heart Cathedral, alongside the Independence Monument. The multi-storey Grand Marché is the city's central market, historically run by the textile traders known as the Nana Benz. In the Akodesséwa district, a market trades in animal parts, herbs and objects used in West African Vodun ritual and traditional medicine. The city remains Togo's commercial and cultural hub.
