Cotonou

Cotonou, on the strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Nokoué, is Benin's largest city and seat of government, though not the official capital. Its Dantokpa market is one of the largest in West Africa, spreading over roughly twenty hectares and selling everything from textiles and produce to traditional Vodun items. The Fondation Zinsou, established in 2005, shows contemporary African art from a space in Cotonou and a museum in a restored villa in Ouidah. The city serves as the country's main port, transport hub and commercial centre.
