Pendjari National Park covers about 2,755 square kilometres in the Atacora region and protects elephants, lions, buffalo, hippopotamus, antelopes and some 300 recorded bird species. It forms the Benin component of the W-Arly-Pendjari (WAP) Complex, which spans Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger. The transboundary property is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List under reference 749bis — the W National Park of Niger was listed in 1996, and the property was extended in 2017 to add the Arly and Pendjari areas. It is regarded as one of the more important protected areas for the West African lion.
