Kara lies about 413 km north of Lomé and grew from the 1970s out of the village formerly known as Lama-Kara. It is the principal city of the Kabye people, whose language predominates locally. Each July the surrounding area hosts the Evala, a traditional wrestling tournament that forms the first stage of Kabye male initiation into adulthood, held at village and canton level. The city is also a gateway to the Koutammakou landscape further east.
