Sokodé lies about 339 km north of Lomé and is the principal city of the Tem, also called Kotokoli, people. It has one of the highest proportions of Muslims of any Togolese city. Sokodé is known for the Gadao-Adossa festival, a multi-day celebration combining ancestral thanksgiving, an initiation rite of the Semassi warriors and communal dances, with horse riders and performers moving through the streets. Fire-handling dances are part of the Tem traditional performances associated with these festivities.
