Assinie-Mafia lies along the Gulf of Guinea on both sides of the outlet of the Aby Lagoon, roughly 80 kilometres east of Abidjan. A narrow peninsula opposite the town, lined with villas and resorts, separates the lagoon from the ocean. It is a favoured weekend destination for residents of Abidjan. In the early colonial period Assinie was for a time among the principal ports of Côte d'Ivoire.
