Taï National Park protects around 3,300 square kilometres of Guinean rainforest and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 (reference 195). It shelters threatened species including the pygmy hippopotamus, chimpanzees noted for tool use, olive colobus monkeys and Jentink's duiker, alongside more than a thousand vertebrate species. The park lies near the Liberian border, roughly 100 kilometres inland from the coast. It is also recognised as a biosphere reserve.
