Comoé National Park covers about 11,500 square kilometres along the Comoé River and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 (reference 227) under natural criteria (ix) and (x). Its north–south gradient spans dry Sudanian to humid Guinea savanna, giving exceptional biodiversity, with over 135 mammal and 500 bird species recorded, including elephants, chimpanzees and hippopotamuses. It was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1983. Placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2003, it was removed from that list in 2017 after conservation improvements.
