The Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve is a transboundary UNESCO World Heritage Site (reference 155), inscribed for Guinea in 1981 and extended to include the Ivorian portion in 1982. Of its roughly 175 square kilometres, about 50 lie in Côte d'Ivoire and the rest in Guinea, with the massif rising to Mount Richard-Molard at 1,752 metres. It harbours endemic species found nowhere else, such as the Nimba viviparous toad and the Nimba otter shrew. It has been listed as World Heritage in Danger since 1992, partly due to mining pressure.
