The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace (Notre-Dame de la Paix) was built between 1985 and 1989 and consecrated by Pope John Paul II on 10 September 1990. Designed by the Lebanese architect Pierre Fakhoury and modelled in part on St Peter's Basilica in Rome, it stands about 158 metres tall with a dome roughly 90 metres in diameter. Guinness World Records lists it as the largest church in the world by area, though its worshipper capacity of about 18,000 is smaller than St Peter's. It was raised in Yamoussoukro, the birthplace of the country's first president, Félix Houphouët-Boigny.
